We selected CRD for a $500K project to dig out a half basement, add two bedrooms and a laundry room, and unify it with the existing finished space. The project included additional complexity in moving the entire home onto a heat pump, rebuilding the deck (which had to be dismantled for the dig-out), and putting everything else back the way it was. We knew early on that we wanted the integration advantages of a design + build firm and we chose CRD over two other competitors for several reasons 1) they are large enough to have all of the essential design + build services in-house 2) their portfolio included experience with this type of project and 3) their processes for the critical design and estimating phases are rigorous and mature.

From kick-off to finish, the project took about a year. Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of it all was that we continued to live in the house the whole time. We watched up close every day, got to know the staff, and learned a couple important things about CRD along the way: 1) they are staffed to the gills with terrific human beings who are tremendously skilled, go the extra mile, and can handle curveballs and 2) from an industry standpoint, they have an excellent reputation that allows them to cherry-pick a roster of literally the best subcontractors in the region. Every aspect of the work product was top-notch.

Our end result was a beautifully transformed home that is vastly more livable for our family, and a project that, while expensive, met all of our requirements, and came in on budget and on time. I would not hesitate for a moment to engage CRD again for a future remodel.

CRD managed a large remodel for our family home that included a sizable kitchen / family room addition, and nearly a whole-house remodel (electrical, roofing, siding, plumbing, HVAC). We couldn’t have been more pleased with their work. Some of the biggest concerns a home owner has with a remodel are (1) cost, (2) timeline, (3) and craftsmanship. CRD hit homeruns on all three of these categories, and transformed our home into such a wonderful place to be. The communication, care, and attention to details couldn’t have been better for such a complicated project, and we really felt that we were a priority every step of the way. We are on embarking on our second remodel with CRD. The first project involved raising the house and an ADU in the basement. It was a huge undertaking and long process from design to wrapping up constructions. We felt we came to know many of the CRD team. What most impressed our family was how smoothly the communication with CRD went; this is followed very closely by their stellar work. Their designers and craftsman worked hard to preserve the character of the house. We can hardly remember what the house was like before.

This time around, we are having a bathroom updated through their “home services” team. It’s a much smaller project, yet the communication has been great. We feel equally confident in our choice of CRD and are looking forward to someday soon, having a much nicer bathroom.

TDLR: We LOVE our new bathroom that CRD did for us! They gave us a design and extremely high quality install that months later we still marvel at and which exceeded what we even imagined. My husband and I could not recommend CRD more highly.

Our Cape Cod is the prettiest house on the street (per our new neighbors, but we agree). The house still has its 1920’s New England charm that had been acclaimed in a 1934 issue of Better Homes & Gardens — dormers, dark hardwood floors and ceiling beams, dutch doors, scrolled vents, and crown moldings — plus modern updates to the kitchen, master, laundry, mud and family rooms that made our decision to purchase a no brainer.

However, we found that the Master bath’s size and pre-WWII design — 14’x9’, a small pedestal sink, tub/shower, and narrow closet — was not functional for us. We knew going in that would be something to improve.

We wanted a functional space that would 1) relieve us of having to carry toiletries back ‘n forth from closet to sink, squeeze past each other through the doorway, and take turns using the sink and 2) design a space with quiet luxury in keeping with the house’s vintage.

We wanted usability, modern convenience with a 1920s feel.

After researching, interviewing and walk-throughs with 4 Design/Build firms, we decided CRD was the company we believed could give us what we wanted and treat our home with love. When one of the project managers reviewed the space and heard our pain points, he smiled broadly, nodded, and said: “Yeah, this’ll be fun.” I was sold.

Thank you Lizzy – our amazing, amazing, talented designer. She listened to me, interpreted my aesthetic, and understood how important it was to me blending vintage with “now”. The chimney and window dormer were major constraints to space and layout options, yet Lizzie crafted the perfect design that made the finished product feel huge despite just shifting the wall a mere foot into the Master. I feel very fortunate to have had Lizzie as our designer; she guided me through multiple decisions and celebrated with me the successes.

Blake, our supremo master carpenter, master contractor and co-PM, was terrific in every aspect. My husband greatly admired his high attention to detail, expertise, craftsmanship and professionalism. In addition to his own carpentry/install work, he managed the various 3rd party tilers, plumbers, demo & paint crews — we never had to worry about work done improperly or in a shoddy manner. Every evening he would thoroughly clean up and vacuum.

Each Friday, project manager Jason would come to followup on the week’s progress; with Blake he would update us what to expect the coming week and ensure all was on schedule; answer questions and make sure we were happy.

The 3rd party contractors CRD engaged were professional, friendly, clean and did great work.

If you’ve read this far, you probably guess that my husband and I are incredibly pleased with our experience with CRD and heartily recommend them. They are a friendly, expert and professional team and we will always remember what they gave us.

From start to finish, CRD was phenomenal to work with, and they went above and beyond in designing and building the addition of our dreams. It was a massive undertaking, and we essentially doubled the size of our home, taking us from a single–story 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, to a two-story 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom. We can’t imagine doing the project without them, especially with all of the structural engineering magic they pulled off.

We first engaged CRD in early 2018, and while we already had a rough idea of what we wanted, they were able to refine our rough idea and help us realize how to better utilize the space. The design process took approximately a year and involved a lot of back and forth. It felt long, but by the time construction started, we had nearly every material, tile, and fixture pre-selected. CRD provided us with a lot of resources, including 3D models, blueprints, and an incredibly detailed document that laid out nearly every detail of our project, including a large gantt chart with dates and completion times.

They told us that construction would take 5 months, starting in June of 2019, and ending in November. It seemed like a bafflingly short timeline, and at no point during the design phase did we take it seriously. We had said that it would be nice to host Thanksgiving in our new addition, but given everything we’d heard about construction time frames we fully expected our home to still be under construction in January or February, especially since we planned to live in the home during construction. But flash forward to November 2019, and somehow, amazingly, we were hosting Thanksgiving for the whole family in our new addition.

That’s not to say everything went completely smoothly for us. Shortly after construction began it was discovered that the front of our existing home was a full 1 ½ inches lower than the back, due to the chimney pulling the foundation down over the past 90 years. On two separate occasions we woke up to waterfalls of rain in our living room. The demolition company they had been working with for years quite abruptly ceased to exist without any warning to their scheduled clients. But every time a wrench was thrown, we were able to sit back calmly with the knowledge that CRD would handle everything, and they did. Our lead carpenter, Darryl, was especially committed to making everything perfect for us, and more than once he surprised us by tracking down better solutions than we had been able to come up with to make the home perfect.

As you might expect, the project was expensive, and it ended up being quite a bit over the initial quote we received. Many of the additional expenses were a result of change orders that we felt would be better to take care of during the construction, but there were also a few surprises that popped up as a result of working on an older 1930’s home. In each of these cases, the added expenses were clearly communicated, and we were given options for how to proceed in each case.

We had weekly meetings in our home to go over what each week’s focus was going to be, and it also helped us plan for what to expect each day when we arrived home from work. Living in the house during the addition was challenging, but also exciting, and the entire crew was very respectful of our space and kept things very clean.

When all was said and done, it probably would have been less expensive to move to a larger home, but besides loving our property and the surrounding neighborhood, we were able to design the new space to our exact wants and needs. We plan on living here our whole lives, so the additional expense feels very much worth it, and you can bet that any future major home renovation projects will involve CRD’s wonderful team.

The design team was excellent, presenting suggestions and creative solutions while at the same time respecting our ideas but keeping us from making major design mistakes. The construction team on site communicated with us exceptionally well, returning calls and texts the same day they received them. . . . If we have another such project we wouldn’t hesitate to contract with CRD again.

It’s always great to see the Staff at CRD. They are All very pleasant people. I would recommend this company to anyone that was interested in a remodeling project.

CRD was an absolute pleasure to work with for our recent bathroom renovation. From the initial inquiry to completion they were always communicative and collaborative. We used CRD for our whole home remodel from September 2020 to March 2021. We interviewed several contractors and design/build firms and were sold by CRD’s process documentation and step-by-step approach. Everyone we worked with (our designers, our carpenter, production supervisor, office staff) were all so friendly, competent and professional. It was as painless an experience as possible, given that we remodeled our whole house while living in it. The team went to great lengths to accommodate us while living in a work site, including zip walls galore, a make-shift kitchen setup, scheduling, and daily clean-up. The designers listened to what we wanted to achieve and turned a vision in our heads into a real design plan. Our lead carpenter cared for our old 1904 home like his own, and perfectly blended the old and new. His attention to detail and craftmanship were inspiring, and the results are amazing. Billing was straightforward and transparent, and change orders were fair. We love our new old home! It combines the best of the old (fine details and character) with a new, glorious kitchen and primary bath. Thank you, CRD!

CRD is an amazingly talented design build firm. Denny and team developed a great plan for our kitchen remodel and made sure to constantly get our input and confirmation on design style and final material choices. The project was on time and on budget. They have transformed our house!

We used CRD for our 4th extensive remodel. CRD is definitely the best we have worked with and surpassed our expectations. The weekly meeting was critical to keeping the project flowing as well as gave opportunity to discuss items. The quality of the work was outstanding as was the design. We also used the interior design team and that was well worth the experience. When problems arose, the staff were quickly problem solved. We love our CRD remodel! We converted a spare area of the basement to an ADU, converted a carport to a garage with new interior access, and remodeled the master bath into a beautiful Zen-like spa. We’ve lived with our new spaces now for six months and it is an awesome lifestyle upgrade. At the beginning of the process CRD designers proposed great ideas and at the same time were very open to our suggestions. The production plan was detailed, meticulous and all went pretty much on schedule. The builders were professional, timely, efficient, and at the same time receptive to our preferences and able to adjust on the fly to accommodate them. Work spaces were kept tidy and disruption was minimal. That says a lot given that construction occurred in three different parts of the home. Our house was originally built in 1940 so invariably some issues with how the house was constructed were uncovered. CRD staff found ingenious solutions to problems. Denny Conner, managers, designers, front office, our onsite carpenter and the various sub-contractors were all easy to communicate with and very talented. We loved their team approach. They listened! We couldn’t be happier with how the project turned out.

There is not a week that goes by that I am not thinking about how grateful I am  for the remodels we hired you for. It’s been nearly 8 years since the first remodel of a bathroom and the quality of your work stands shining. The plumbing, lighting, paint, electrical, tile work . . . it is so well done. There were so many things that you, Kylan, and Phil saw “around the corner” and recommended. And all within reason and trust. We don’t regret a penny we spent on change orders or anything . . . anything at all we hired you to do. We’re so pleased, still. Always professional – on time, kept to schedule to the day. Everyone was a perfectionist and the finished product shows it. Designer solved a tricky space and Denny gave us a simple pointer that solved what I thought might be a problem of my own making.

We hired CRD for a substantial remodel of the lower level of our Craftsman home in Seattle (relocating and expanding the master bathroom, reconfiguring the laundry space, repositioning support beams, etc.). Throughout the design process there was good communication and Denny & team provided several options for us to choose from; all the while considering our wish list, listening to our ideas, and providing their prudent guidance & suggestions where appropriate.

Blake, our lead carpenter, was awesome: great attention-to-detail, thoughtful approach, reliable and professional, good communicator, and he kept the job site spotless. (We remained living in the house during all of the construction, so this was a huge plus and much appreciated.) The quality of CRD’s work, and that of their subcontractors, is top-notch and it shows in the finished product. Our project was completed within budget, began on time, and actually ended a bit ahead of schedule. This was quite a substantial investment for us ($100k+), but CRD kept everything moving forward smoothly and handled all of our questions and concerns quickly, thoroughly and fairly. We engaged Denny and his team in 2016 for a major remodel of our 1926 Dutch Colonial home in Capitol Hill. From the first interaction, we were impressed. Denny, as owner, was always available throughout for questions and periodic check-ins. The really impressive part was each individual person we dealt with. Everyone was great, but in particular the main designer on our project, Kylan, and the lead carpenter, Blake, were absolutely amazing. Both had intense focus on details, were sensitive to our questions and to our budget, and always followed through exactly as promised. The integrated design/build approach turned out to be smart and I honestly can’t imagine even considering a different firm for any future work. As I told them when we completed the work, I’m a big fan of constructive feedback and I struggle to come up with any for them. We did a full kitchen remodel, including knocking down structural walls, adding a brand new master bathroom and remodeling an existing bathroom, powder room and pantry area. They were on schedule, exceeded expectations and the quality of the work and attention to detail is impressive. 5 stars all the way.

We just completed a substantial basement remodel through CRD (including a dig down and removing supporting walls). The process went incredibly smoothly from design through the final inspection. CRD communicates well, they stay in budget (our only overage was due to extra electrical work that could not have been verified prior to cutting into the walls), and take immense pride in their work. Their lead carpenter on our job – who essentially lived with us for 5 months — was wonderful and trustworthy and soon became an idol for our young son. CRD responded to inquiries/issues quickly (one weekend we found we did not have hot water and the owner came over within an hour to resolve the problem immediately). We will definitely be using CRD for our future projects and are happy to refer them to others!

We had heard all the horror stories about remodel projects gone wrong, but CRD delivered on-time, on-budget, and with beautiful high quality work.

Our kitchen was shaped like a lower case “b” – a narrow corridor with a small box at the end. Working with the CRD Architectural Designer, we developed a plan to widen the “feel of the “corridor using window and cabinet placement, and better utilize the “box” by creating a flexible rolling island with a reclaimed wood countertop that could be placed in one of several locations (including an adjacent entry way) to help maximize functionality and aesthetics. The designer deftly guided us through the design phase in creating the layout (using 3D design software) and choosing cabinets, surfaces, colors, and hardware so we had high confidence going into this expensive project that we would be happy with the result. The CRD Lead Carpenter was a master craftsman, superb project manager, frequent communicator and all around nice guy to have in your house all day, every day, for 3 months. The finished kitchen exceeds our expectations and has transformed how we use and live in the space. CRD kept the project moving and handled all questions and problems quickly, thoroughly and very fairly. We would highly recommend CRD to anyone considering a construction project in the Puget Sound area.

This is the third project that I’ve had CRD do for me, and, just like the others, this was very satisfactory.
This was a kitchen remodel on a houseboat. The design stage was very thorough, mostly updating the original layout, but with significant changes to lights and refrigerator location. The implementation had to deal with the very sloppy previous work, the fact that the floor was not level, and, being a houseboat, a level is useless. The lead carpenter solved a lot of problems, and was a pleasure to deal with.
The result is more than I had hoped for, a pleasure to use, both as a kitchen and using the island as a working space, where I’m writing this.

Denny and the CRD team designed and remodeled our basement – transforming it from a place we dreaded going to switch the laundry to a fabulous master bedroom, bath, and office space where we truly enjoy spending time. Remodels are expensive, so it is a relief to be so happy with the results as I write this long-overdue review (one year after project completion).

CRD did a wonderful kitchen redesign and remodel for my client’s 1931 brick Tudor home. I sell real estate and I was representing my clients when they bought the home in 2008 and while the kitchen was fine, it was not great. There was no flow, it was tight and congested and being a brick Tudor it seemed to be stuck that way. 
Not so, not in expert design eyes of CRD. They were able to reconfigure the existing kitchen in such a way that it became open and light with tons of flow. They created a smooth transition from the dining room into the kitchen, and also out to the gardens. The design was modern and yet also classic and it will always be beautiful, not a trend that we will see go out of style. Within a year of this wonderful remodel my clients were relocated for work, and we had to put the house on the market. Let me tell you, the kitchen SOLD the house! We all know how important an excellent kitchen is, it is the heartbeat of the home. The team at CRD Design Build are kind and helpful and I would highly recommend them to any of my clients, and I do.

CRD provided such an amazing service from beginning to end that it’s hard to know where to start this review! I am writing this review not at a client of CRD Design Build but as someone in the initial stages of exploration and research of our home remodel wants and needs. My initial conversation with Michele Conner was extremely informative and she was very friendly. We quickly found during that conversation that we may not be a good match at that time yet she continued to give me valuable information on home remodels as well as ideas of where and who else we could talk to. As I continued to research I found the information Michele gave me in our initial conversation was spot on and has helped as I have gone forward.

I have also greatly appreciated CRD’s level of customer service and their follow through has been extraordinary. After our conversation they sent me additional information, a card thanking me for our conversation and followed up with me a few weeks later. All this for someone who was possible not a match during our initial conversation. As someone who is very particular about customer service it has been refreshing.

We are still in the exploration phase of our remodel but such level of customer care has made a great impression on me and I am happily continuing to see if CRD will end up being the right match for us.

I cannot speak highly enough about CRD. From the design phase to the finished product, the team was on time, professional, communicative, and had absolutely perfect execution of our kitchen remodel and redesign of the whole main floor of our home. We loved working with Megan as our designer- she totally got us and our design aesthetic. the computer program they used at the time really helped us envision what the space would look like since we were tearing down walls (with 3D virtual reality even!). She thought of everything. We did not feel decision fatigue, she walked us through each piece in bite sized pieces. She was so fun! Denny always came to us if/when the budget would be impacted by some big ideas we might have– this helped us make decisions. But ultimately we ended up right on budget. In the build phase, the same lead carpenter, Blake, worked at our house every day. He was on time, communicative, and a total perfectionist (which we loved!). He really became part of the family during the process since we lived at home during the remodel so we saw him everyday for 13 weeks! Our kids grew to love him, and we did, too. The remodel finished right on time (well a few days late b/c the cabinets were a few days later than anticipated- not their fault, and boy did Blake try his best to get them to hurry up on delivery). We went right from CRD to a general contractor to finish up some other work in our home, and we quickly realized how good we had it with CRD. We could not be more pleased with CRD’s process, accountability, and quality of work. 2 years later, things are still in tip-top shape. We get compliments every time someone comes to our home. You will not be sorry!

CRD was amazing to work with from beginning to end. We did a whole house to-the-studs remodel, including digging down our basement. We gave them our budget and our vision, and they made our house into a dream home. The design process was easy and fun, and we could not have been happier with the carpenter (Josh) who lead the construction process. The final result is AMAZING. As could be expected with a big project, there were a couple minor hiccups along the way, but CRD went out of their way to fix them at no cost to us and in a way that didn’t impact the construction schedule. We highly recommend them.

We hired CRD to remodel our outdated and very funky kitchen. Denny was the only contractor that we had interviewed who was able to offer a solution to a very tricky back door issue. That sold us! Throughout the design phase there was excellent communication with Denny and his team. Their visual design tools were very helpful in making design choices and Denny’s input and experience in this area were extremely valuable. Our lead carpenter was professional, detailed orientated and kept the job site clean. (Since we were still living in the house during the construction, this was a huge bonus.) We had a weekly team meeting on site throughout the course of the project and the final punch list items were completed quickly. Our project began on time and ended on time. The few issues that came up were dealt with in a timely and professional manner. We absolutely love our new kitchen. The remodel changed our relationship with our house. The kitchen that used to be hidden from the rest of the house is now the gathering space/homework desk/coffee &wine bar/ breakfast counter. It’s the hub where everything happens. We have CRD, Denny, Tom and the rest to thank for that. We would hire CRD for our next remodel project in an instant!

CRD Design Build was amazing from start to finish. We chose them because they really took the time to make sure we understood the Design Build process and how the project timeline worked. Denny, the owner, was fantastic in helping us translate our dreams into reality. And our designer really took the time to listen to our wish list, suggest design options that we wouldn’t have thought of and help us customize without going over budget. The 3D rendering was incredibly helpful during the design process!

Once construction started, Michael, our project manager, and Josh, our lead carpenter, were very knowledgeable. Josh was on site every day taking care of the house and directing/ coordinating all of the work. The rest of the carpentry crew were always pleasant and willing to answer our questions. And when the inevitable, “oh no” moment happened during our construction, Michael and Josh figured out how to fix the situation with as little stress as possible.

We finished on time and on budget. Our house is absolutely amazing. We would hire CRD again in a minute!
