Frequently Asked Whole-Home Renovations Questions
Where do we start with a whole-home remodel?
Every whole-home remodel starts with a Discovery Call. We’ll ask about your goals, how you want to live in your home, and what’s not working in your current layout. We’ll also ask you to share photos of your spaces so we can start understanding the scope.
From there, we schedule an In-Home Consultation to walk through your property and discuss possibilities in person. Once you decide to move forward, you’ll be paired with a designer who will guide you through our six-milestone design process, from programming through a fixed-price construction agreement.
How much does a whole-home remodel cost in Seattle?
Whole-home remodels in Seattle typically range from $400,000 to $800,000 or more, depending on the size of the home, the number of rooms being renovated, and whether structural changes are involved. Projects that include a full kitchen and bathroom renovation, plus living areas and bedrooms, will naturally be at the higher end of the range.
Because every whole-home remodel is unique, our Whole House Pricing Guide (crddesignbuild.com/content-offer/whole-house-remodeling-pricing-guide/) gives you a detailed breakdown of what to expect based on real Seattle projects. During the design process, we provide a fixed price so there are no surprises when construction begins.
How long does a whole-home remodel take?
A whole-home remodel with CRD typically takes twelve months from design through construction completion, depending on the scope. The design phase alone can run four to six months, as there are more selections and design decisions to work through when renovating an entire home.
Construction timelines depend on whether we’re working in phases—for instance, completing the kitchen and bathrooms first so you can use them while other areas are being finished—or tackling everything at once. Your Project Manager will provide a detailed schedule before construction begins.
Does CRD warranty its work?
CRD warrants its work for 24 months starting from the time we sign the construction agreement. As the warranty comes to an end we always reach out to clients to let them know in advance in case any last minute fixes need to be made.
What is design build?
Design build is a full-service approach to home remodeling that includes both the design and construction. The design-build approach tends to offer homeowners better efficiency, accountability, communication, and convenience for their home remodeling project.
What happens in the design process? How long does it take?
Our design process is divided into three steps: Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Agreement.
Your design journey with CRD will begin with the Schematic Design phase in which we learn more about your goals, take measurements of your home, and gather ideas. During a series of meetings, your designer and architect will get your feedback on initial floor plans and design direction. As we develop an ideal scope of work, you will then have the opportunity to review preliminary pricing at the Schematic Estimate Meeting. Open and honest conversation about budget tracking is the foundation of CRD’s proven process and will give you the confidence and clarity to move forward.
This is followed by a series of Design Development meetings, where you will further refine your design. At the Letter of Intent Meeting, you will review updated pricing and make the decision to move forward with construction.
Finally, at the Construction Agreement meeting, you will have the opportunity to review your final pricing and construction documents before signing a fixed-price construction agreement. From there, construction begins, and soon you will be enjoying your remodeled space.
The design process timeline will differ depending on the size of the project.

How much will my remodel cost?
Prices vary widely depending on the area of the house being remodeled, how old the house is, and if any major structural alterations need to be done to the existing home to achieve the design goal.

What happens if we go over budget?
CRD is a fixed price construction company. We set a fixed cost once the design is finalized. There are two reasons the cost may change during construction: unforeseen conditions and the client. Unforeseen conditions uncovered during construction are common when remodeling old homes, but we have a proven process to quickly identify and solve potential hurdles. The other way the budget would change would be if the client decides to change the design after construction has begun.
What is a Project Manager and does my project need one?
A Project Manager helps gets your project out of design and smoothly into construction. They work with the entire production team on ensuring your project is always moving forward.

Will I have to move out of my house during construction?
A whole house remodel tends to be quite extensive and touch all parts and systems of the home. It may not be possible for you to remain in the home during a whole house remodel for a variety of reasons, including safety. Relocating for construction allows us to be more effective and efficient.
We can assess the likelihood of having to move out at the beginning of the process so you know well in advance and can start planning.
What are your best suggestions for living in a house that is being worked on?
We always ensure there is a separation in your home between the areas being worked on and the living spaces when your project starts. We do our best to keep dust and debris out of the living areas by putting up temporary walls between spaces.
A bathroom remodel can be tricky to work around if its the only bathroom in the house. You may need to relocate for the duration of construction.
If you work from home during your project, we will try to accommodate your schedule. We always recommend having open and honest communication with your production team to mitigate any potential issues.
