Nothing complements a meal better than the delicious, flavourful spices you use in its preparation. However, there’s also nothing worse than looking at an exquisite recipe and realizing you have a limited spice supply.
That’s why having a full spice rack is a must.
But, let’s face it — spice racks can be ugly. A haphazard mess of colors standing out against your ivory kitchen wall is a sore thumb.
At CRD Design Build, we’ve spent over 40 years transforming homes to fit your lifestyle — from entire house additions to dealing with the spice racks that just won’t disappear.
There’s not a job too big or too small for us, and that’s why we’re here today to offer you 5 pull-out spice rack ideas that you’ll love.
That’s right — keep these fundamental ingredients in your kitchen, but keep them out of sight, hidden away on a shelf or in a cabinet, until you need them most.
Before we begin, there is one key question we have to answer.
Do I Need a Spice Rack?
It’s a valid question. You may still be on the fence regarding whether you should take the dive and install a spice rack in your kitchen — or even just inside your kitchen cabinet.
Spices are great, after all. But why can’t you just throw those spices into a cabinet and forget about them?
The truth is, you can.
In fact, one of our steps below even suggests doing so. But, if you care about home decor and want to maximize your storage space, then a pull-out spice rack hidden away in a cabinet, or on the side of a countertop or shelf, is a really effective method in doing so.
What’s more, there are so many options you can utilize when planning your spice storage. Not only can you hide your rack full of spices away in a kitchen cabinet, but you can even create dedicated pull-out spice rack shelves.
In truth, how you decide to store your spices doesn’t really matter. Every method available increases storage space and looks great in all kitchens.
If it’s right for you, do it.
To answer the question directly: No, you don’t need a spice rack. But they’re great to have — especially if made to fit.

The 5 Pull-Out Spice Rack Ideas You’ll Love
“Hidden” Behind the Door Pull-Out Spice Rack
This “pull-out” spice rack is a little unorthodox, but we thought we’d start with a simple one. It uses no fancy ball bearing slide mechanisms, nor does it require much manual labor.
Simply put, this pull-out spice rack involves attaching shelves or racks to the inside of a pantry, kitchen door, or cabinet.
It makes this spice rack quite the niche, especially for those living in a kitchen without a pantry.
However, as said, you can also integrate this type of spice rack into your kitchen cabinet — an excellent option for storage.
Simple Practical Beautiful offers an excellent guide on how to do this.
In short, you need a wall-mounted rack, a drill, and some wood-friendly screws — their size varying depending on the thickness of your own cabinet door. Measure twice, be careful, or call CRD for any assistance you may need.
If you’re using a wire rack, John’s DIY offers some excellent installation tips, too.
To surmise:
- Make sure that when the cabinet door closes, the spice rack isn’t going to hit the shelves or any of the other items inside.
- Use a tape measure or spirit level to mark the spice rack’s drill holes on the kitchen cabinet door.
- Drill into the back of the cabinet door, making sure to not drill all the way through. You can use duct tape to easily set your depth on the drill bit.
- Insert your screws into the marked holes on the cabinet door.
- Fit your spice rack onto the screws. Make sure everything lines up, and the cabinet door closes properly.
Base Cabinet/Drawer Pull-Out Spice Racks — On a Budget!
This is a really simple approach that doesn’t utilize any kind of shelves. All you need is a pull-out drawer. You guessed it — we’re going to effectively turn already fitted empty drawers in your kitchen into spice rack drawers.
So, if you have a pull out drawer to spare, you don’t need any additions for this option. The simplest way would be to fill up your pull-out drawer or base cabinet by chucking your spices into it and forgetting about them.
But that’s not what you’re here for.
The YouTube Channel Do It On a Dime offers some excellent instructions on how you can turn your drawers or base cabinet space into a handy pull-out spice rack.
This “hack” uses nothing more than:
- a glue gun
- a ruler
- an Exacto knife
- A foam core board
With these tools, you can turn your drawer into an organized pull-out spice rack — and into a great storage solution.
Check out the video below to learn more about how this is done.
Sliding Pull-Out Spice Rack
You knew this one was coming — and for good reason. If you’re out for a good idea for a pull-out spice rack, it’s one of the best.
If you have no cabinets or doors in your kitchen to spare, all you need is a gap or an end that you can squeeze a spice rack into.
And the best part is you can make this made-to-fit spice rack yourself.
Mike McCrory provides an excellent video on how.
To surmise:
- Cut plywood to size, and use a depth gauge to add a dado to the strips where necessary.
- Glue the cut pieces of plywood together to form the structure of the pull-out drawer.
- Use ½” plywood strips to connect the front and back of the structure, and use brad nails to hold each end together.
- Spray with polyurethane to secure the shelves and plywood design fully. Hint: Use cut plexiglass to improve the visibility of the spices.
- Cut slots into the back of the drawer’s bottom, and drill two holes into the drawer slides for tabs that insert into the hole.
- Attach self-closing drawer slides to the back of the spice rack.
- Fit the cabinet drawer front.
It’s quite hands-on and requires some manual labor, but you don’t have to put the work in.
When in doubt, let a professional do it. It guarantees a safe construct and saves you time.
Individually Sliding Pull-Out Spice Rack
For excellent storage, you can add multiple pull-out spice racks to the end of your cabinet, or even inside your cabinets.
With these, you can have it so your spice rack slides out individually.
All you need to do is add extra ball-bearings to the rack and make thinner cuts.
This adds that extra bit of organization to your full extension spice rack, and, if you’ve got a full rack, it makes those buried herbs easier to access, too.
Check out how Youtuber Gunflint Designs does it.
Feeling lazy? You can also buy “in-cabinet” pre-made spice racks. They may not look as nice as adding your own full extension, but if home decor isn’t the primary goal in your kitchen, they get the job done just as effectively.
Slide ‘n Store Pull-Out Spice Rack
This idea is smaller than the full extension approach and is another that doesn’t use shelves. If you’ve only got a small herb and spice collection, the slide ‘n store approach works just as effectively.
Quite simply, you purchase an organizer that can fit into your cabinet that pulls out when you need it.
These organizers often slide out individually, like our spice rack above, and are handy tools to have — especially if you live in a kitchen with little storage space.

What Is a Unique Spice Rack?
There are all kinds of unique spice racks out there, but not all of them will fit into your cabinet or shelves.
You can actually get spice racks that go atop your base cabinet, which look like test tubes. They make meal preparation with your spices look like a crazy experiment.
If you don’t mind not having a spice rack cabinet, or don’t want to fit spice rack shelves, then the test tubes are an excellent and unique choice.
What Is the Best Spice Rack?
Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to this question. There are tons of options for spice racks available, and places to fit them. To name a few:
- Wall cabinet
- Base cabinet
- Slide a shelf
- Shelves
Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The best way to know which kind of spice rack kitchen cabinet or solution works for your kitchen is to talk to a professional, such as CRD Design.
Can You Make a Spice Rack?
You absolutely can, but you need the right know-how to do it.
We shared an excellent video above on how to make your own Sliding Pull-Out Spice Rack. But there’s no pressure to do so.
Even if you want a spice rack on your shelf or cabinet, CRD Design can help with the design and creation process. Call us today.
How to Mount a Spice Rack on the Wall?
If you don’t want a spice rack that slides out or is hidden within a cabinet, you can mount a spice rack, or multiple spice rack shelves, onto your wall.
To do this:
- Use a spirit level and tape measure to figure out where you need to drill your holes.
- Mark the locations with a pencil, drill pilot holes first, and then drill straight into the wall.
- Add a wall anchor, then tighten the screws and wall mounts for your spice rack into place.
- Repeat the process for each of your shelves.
If you’re installing cabinet shelves, it’s a similar process, and you can apply the same above steps.
Can You Paint a Spice Rack?
You absolutely can — especially wooden spice racks. In fact, many people like to paint old wooden spice racks and use them as bookshelves.
To do this, all you have to do is coat your spice rack in a wood primer, and apply spray paint or whichever wood-safe paint you prefer to the spice rack until you achieve your desired thickness.
When it comes to painting, wood is quite a versatile material, so how much or how little you paint your spice rack is entirely up to you.
