Job Details
Position Summary
The architect role provides design services to clients, advises the design manager, and provides technical
support to design staff. The architect is responsible for the management of assigned project designs, from
the initial client interview to completion of the design, specifications, and permit submittal. The position is
responsible for producing both preliminary and working design documents for the production handoff
package. The position works in close coordination with the Design Department manager and other design
staff as well as with clients. It is expected that the role will employ the philosophy of the company mission
in all designs and will provide support to staff designers. As needed the architect will work as the Architect
of Record (AOR) while producing and reviewing design department documents.Essential Functions
ARCHITECT OF RECORD (AOR)/MANAGEMENT
• Understand and maintain AOR licensing and professional design insurance requirements.
• Oversee, review, and stamp all architectural design documents submitted to applicable jurisdiction
as AOR as needed by CRD.
• Keep up with industry technology for incorporation into Design Department.
• Review all design documents before they are issued as directed by the design manager.
• Ensure that drawings and specifications conform to company standards.
DESIGN/ARCHITECTURE
• Responsible for all stages of assigned projects including preliminary design, design development,
and handoff to production staff.
• Research and specify items and materials as necessary to meet the varying needs of each unique
project.
• Conduct initial client interviews and document client’s design goals, hopes, and dreams and
develop the scope of work and import before photos for new projects.
• Actively listen to the client to capture their vision and educate them on the scope of their project.
• Ensure that the home is accurately measured and photographed for documentation of existing
conditions.
• Produce as-built drawings, create imaginative and practical design solutions, and prepare floor
plans (sketching and/or CAD) and elevation drawings for preliminary client meeting.
• Review designs with design manager, production manager and estimator for construction
feasibility and cost implications before presenting preliminary drawings.
• Refine and hone the preliminary plan and give the project manager and estimator drawings for
obtaining a preliminary estimate.
• Design cabinet layouts and elevations and review with client. Upon cabinet design completion,
review layout designs to check for completeness of order. Process orders, document ordering, and
keep production staff informed of timelines.
• Develop working drawings, including electrical and mechanical plans and window and door
schedules.
• Create or work with CAD designer to create 3-D architectural features accurately representing
existing and new design plans and create color renderings of designs as necessary. Perform or
assist 3-D animation walkthroughs of design plans with client and make changes as requested by
client.
• Create specifications with oversight from design manager. Implement drawing changes and update
specifications as necessary.
• Recommend finishes, fixtures, materials, appliances and other miscellaneous items unique to each
job and assist the client in shopping at showrooms if necessary for assigned projects as well as
other clients.
• Prepare contract drawings for design manager, production manager and estimator to finalize the
construction agreement.
• Prepare permit paperwork, documents, and drawings to obtain permit.
• Visit job sites to resolve design issues as required.
• Design cabinet layouts and order cabinetry from company suppliers.
• Create client and office design books as well as create production books as needed.
• Maintain current knowledge of construction codes and implement changes as required.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of design trends, cabinetry trends, building practices, and
technical applications, including design software.
• Keep up to date on industry trends and developments, including changes to building costs and
how this impacts projects.
• Other duties as assigned.Office & Administrative Duties
• Participate in weekly design review meeting.
• Document daily hours in 15-minute increments on daily task log, complete weekly timesheet, and
turn in both at end of each week to the office manager.
• Answer the telephone as necessary.
• Carry out office garbage and dishwasher duties per schedule.
• Conduct yourself in a professional, positive, and courteous manner at all times.
• Participate in all company events, including company meetings, and training sessions.
• Establish good working relationships with other team members.
• Foster positive communications and relationships with clients, vendors, and team members.
• Adhere to company policies and procedures.
• Actively participate and lead meetings as requested.
• Provide phone backup and participate as a member of the team.
• Other duties as assigned.Qualifications
• Licensed architect, or non-registered graduate, with 8-10 years of experience, post-degree, in
architecture. Majority of experience would preferably be in residential architecture. Residential
remodeling experience highly desired.
• Strong understanding of building codes and requirements.
• Experience with residential design-build and the philosophy that accompanies it is highly desired.
• Creative imagination and practical understanding of construction.
• Proficient in CAD drafting and rendering skills in ArchiCAD.
• Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Hand-drawing skills and good design sense for space planning and finishes selections required.
• Good communication skills, personable demeanor, and sense of humor.
• Previous experience working with and at ease with residential clients, assessing their unique needs
as well as being at able to translate their ideas into plans within budget.
• Strong knowledge of appropriate English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and word usage and
ability to communicate concepts, thoughts and ideas both written and orally to others.
• Ability to establish and maintain collaborative, effective working relationships with managers,
peers, clients, vendors, and other employees.
• Accuracy for details, plans, and ideas. This role has an emphasis on precise details.
• Strong sense of planning with fluctuating building materials, construction costs, and an ability to
see the complete picture of how this impacts the project, including design.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of Outlook and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to work within deadlines.
• Proven track record working with all levels of an organization as well as clients.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and state required insurance.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
• Frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
• Frequent lifting and carrying up to 15 pounds.
• Occasional lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds.
• Must be able to travel to sites and meet with clients, vendors, meetings as needed.
• Must be able to work at computer or desk area for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to use a computer and see color.
